How to Track Visibility in Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews now sit above traditional results for a growing share of queries. Here's how to track your visibility inside them — and what moves the needle.
Google AI Overviews are the largest single shift in search since Featured Snippets — and they don't behave like either traditional results or pure AI chat. Tracking them takes its own playbook.
What AI Overviews actually are
AI-generated answers Google now renders above the 10 blue links. Each Overview cites 3–8 sources and often includes a list of businesses, products or providers. Being cited inside an Overview is the new "rank #1" — except more dominant, because it answers the question outright.
Why this matters for local businesses
For "near me" and category queries, AI Overviews now surface a curated list of businesses that often differs from the local pack. If you rank in Google Maps but not in the Overview, you lose the click. If you rank in the Overview, you often steal it.
The tracking model
- Coverage: Of N tracked queries, how many surface an AI Overview at all?
- Citation rate: Of those Overviews, in how many is your business or website cited?
- Position in Overview: First citation, middle, last — earlier = more clicks.
- Competitor citations: Who else is cited next to you, or instead of you?
- Source pages: Which of your URLs get pulled into Overviews?
Ranking factors that move AI Overviews
- Topical depth on the page being cited.
- Schema.org structured data (especially LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage).
- Quoted, scannable answers near the top of the page.
- Strong, recent reviews on Google profile.
- External citations from trusted sources (industry directories, press, .gov, .edu).
- Entity clarity — Google needs to know exactly what your business is and where.
Citation analysis workflow
- Pull the AI Overview for each tracked query.
- Extract the cited URLs.
- Tag each by domain authority, content type, and freshness.
- Compare to the URLs Google ranks #1–#3 organically — they're often different.
- Identify which of your pages are eligible vs invisible.
Optimization opportunities
- Add direct, structured answers to the top of your service pages.
- Wrap pricing, hours, services in proper schema.
- Earn 1–2 industry directory citations per service line.
- Refresh date-stamped content quarterly.
- Make sure your Google Business Profile is impeccable — Overviews lean on it.
Local business example
An HVAC company in Phoenix tracked 60 "AC repair near me" style queries. AI Overviews appeared on 47 of them. They were cited on 6. Within 30 days of adding LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and 3 industry citations, citations rose to 22 — and call volume followed.
What to ignore
- Vanity citations on irrelevant queries.
- Day-to-day volatility — track week-over-week.
- Branded queries — almost always cite you anyway.
